RAMBLIN’ RECK: Plenty of racing and golf to fill sports fans schedule for week ahead

TERRE HAUTE — It’s a busy, busy week, highlighted by racing, golf and baseball.

n Illinois fair harness racing is on the Edgar County Fair schedule today and Wednesday at Paris. Post time is 1 p.m. CDT today and noon Wednesday.

A lawn mower race is on tonight’s schedule.

• High school girls golf teams begin practice this week and will have their first first matches next week. Terre Haute North will have its annual tournament at Hulman Links on Aug. 4.

• The Terre Haute women’s city golf tourney begins Friday at Rea Park and winds up Monday, and some younger players from the area have qualified for the Mountain Dew Tour Championship set for Friday.

• Wayne Newton Post 346 is the host team for an American Legion baseball regional this weekend; the local sectional champs will be hoping to earn another trip to the state finals.

• Four days of race action are on tap at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, capped by the Brickyard 400 presented by Crown Royal on Sunday.

The Nationwide Series race will be run at IMS this year instead of Lucas Oil Raceway. Danica Patrick will mark her return to Indy and recently took television personality Katie Couric for a ride around the track.

Nationwide Series practice is scheduled for Thursday. Grand Am practice, qualifying and two races are on Friday’s schedule. Juan Pablo Montoya and Jamie McMurray, a winner at Indy, will be teamed in one of the races.

Qualifying and practice for the main Sprint Cup race are set for Saturday followed by the Nationwide Series race.

Jimmie Johnson has won three times at Indy and is looking forward to racing at the oval again. He is in contention to win another Sprint Cup championship.

• U.S. Auto Club racing is on tap Thursday at Lucas Oil Raceway and an ARCA race will be run at the Clermont track on Friday.

• Ryan Hunter-Reay’s streak of three wins in a row was halted on Sunday in IZOD IndyCar Series action in Edmonton. Helio Castroneves finished strong to get the win with Takumo Soto second.

Hunter-Reay still is the leader in the point totals but Castroneves is second followed by Will Power and Scott Dixon with four races left on the schedule.

It should be an interesting finish once again, but Dario Franchitti won’t be going for another title this time.

• Off time — We had some time off last week and took in a couple events.

We saw “On Golden Pond” presented by Crossroads Repertory at Indiana State. The cast did a super job, particularly Lew Hackleman in the role made famous by Henry Fonda.

This play will be presented one more time — on Thursday — in the final week of the CR season.

Saturday, we went to Fairbanks Park for the Community Band Festival. The music was great and the weather was decent considering how hot it has been most days.
