RAMBLIN' RECK: Pacers not expected to take series, but could push it to Game 7

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana Pacers haven’t been in the NBA playoffs for some time, but haven’t played like newcomers against the Chicago Bulls, the team with the best record in the league this season.

After coming close for three games but losing, the blue and gold never trailed in beating the Bulls on Saturday to force a fifth game to be played tonight in Chicago (8 p.m. TNT).

No one expects the Pacers to come back from an 0-3 deficit and win the series, but they could force it to six or seven games with some luck.

Now, the big talk in Indy — it actually started before the playoffs — is whether interim coach Frank Vogel should have that label removed and be made the coach for next season.

It could be interesting.

• Hoosiers cited — Two Indiana players were cited last week on the USA Today All-USA prep boys basketball team.

Cody Zeller of Washington was named to the second team, and Marcus Teague of Pike is on the third team, with 15 players on each of the three teams.

Austin Rivers of Winter Park, Fla., was named player of the year. He will go to Duke.

Zeller was named MVP in the Derby Classic played last week in Louisville. He had 13 points.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Dane Fife, 31, has resigned as men’s basketball coach at IPFW to take a job at Michigan State on Tom Izzo’s staff.

He had an 82-97 record at IPFW in six seasons. His team was 18-12 last season.

A former Big Ten defensive player of the year at Indiana, he said he had been recruited by Izzo and it had been his goal to work for the coach.

• Terre Haute South grad Emma Bilyeu is doing well in tennis at Wittenberg. She was off to a 14-3 start.

• Kevin Myers, who had been the only boys soccer coach at Washington, has decided to resign, not happy with the class system in the sport.

He compiled a 312-79-24 mark in 19 seasons with the Hatchets, winning 16 sectionals, nine regionals and five semistates.

• Two coaches at Evansville Bosse have resigned.

Andrew Weinzapfel quit as football coach, stating he wanted to spend more time with family. He had a 16-40 mark in five seasons, and the Bullogs won their first sectional in 15 years last fall.

Angie Oliver will pursue opportunities in school administration after stepping down as girls basketball coach.

She had a 247-169 record in 21 seasons.

• Mike Waggoner may or may not be out as the boys basketball coach at Loogootee.

The school board tabled action on the matter last week after officials suggested he not be retained as coach after three seasons.

Stay tuned.

• It was good to see Chad Collins make the cut in the Heritage PGA tournament and earn $12,312. One round of 75 hurt the pro from Cloverdale in the final standings.

• John Millikan, who had been sports editor at The Sullivan Daily Times, now is working at Albany, Ga.

Aaron Kennedy, who had been at The Paris Beacon-News, now does sports at Sullivan.

• The University of Massachusetts will play football in the Mid-American Conference starting in 2012 and will play home games at the home of the New England Patriots.

• Indiana State grad Kylie Hutson won the pole vault at the SAC Relays.

• Terre Haute North grad Steve Weatherford, now with the New York Jets, and Alan Ball were honorary coaches for the University of Illinois spring football game last week. Weatherford was a two-time All-American at the school and holds career and season records in punting.

Illinois has signed Devin Langford of Huntsville, Ala., in basketball. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 17.4 points and 7.0 assists for Lee High School.

Bradley grad Sam Maniscalco has enrolled at the school and may play for the Illini if he obtains a medical hardship waiver and if the school is granted a transfer waiver.

• Purdue has hired Micah Shrewsberry as an assistant in men’s basketball. He had been an assistant at Butler for four years.
