We are glad:
• that Drew Brees and New Orleans got together on a new contract for the former Purdue quarterback.
His deal apparently is worth $100 million and runs for five years. The Saints finally have some good news to report.
• that the Indiana Pacers kept Roy Hibbert and George Hill under contract and signed some new players.
Hibbert got a four-year $58-million deal and Hill’s contract is for five years and $40 million.
• that the Pittsburgh Pirates enjoyed a few days alone in first place in the NL Central standings.
We knew they would have a tough time in Milwaukee while Cincinnati swept the St. Louis Cardinals in dramatic fashion, leaving the Bucs a game back going into a series with Colorado on Monday.
• that rain did not wipe out any of the racing at the Martinsville Agricultural Fair last week.
Sherry Repp is secretary of the fair and is in her 50th year of working with the event. She helped us get some results on Thursday when we had a busy schedule. Thanks, Sherry.
More harness racing is slated at the Edgar County Fair next week and at the Clark County Fair the last week of the month.
• Tom-Cattin’ It — Some golfers from the area did well in a qualifier for the Boys State Championship played Friday at Harrison Hills at Attica.
Alec Davis of Greencastle was low shooter with 1-under-par 71 and Terre Haute North senior Sam Pollock tied for 10th in the 59-player field with 77 to qualify for the action.
Ryan Baker of North shot 79 and is an alternate.
• Nick Hutcheson of Greencastle is one of the University of Southern Indiana recruits in basketball. He had more than 1,000 points and more than 1,000 rebounds in his prep career.
• Indiana State recruit Andre Strohm of Marshall played in another all-star game, scoring a touchdown in the Illinois Shrine Game at Bloomington Saturday and leading the East squad with 64 yards rushing. His high school coach, Todd Evers, coached his team with help from assistant Kyle Shay.
• Eastern Illinois has hired former player Emanuel Dildy for its men’s basketball coaching staff. He was coach at Kennedy-King College in Chicago the past two years.
• Chicago high school senior Jabari Parker is one of the top prospects in basketball and has narrowed his college list to 10 schools, including Michigan State, Duke, Kentucky and DePaul.
• Richard Petty recently celebrated his 75th birthday.
The King of NASCAR won 200 races and seven titles and won 27 races in 1967.
• Jeff Schulz has resigned as baseball coach at Evansville Mater Dei after taking the team to the state finals. He had a 98-50-1 mark in five seasons and will continue to coach the Funkhouser Legion team.
• April McDivitt is the new girls basketball coach at Roncalli High School in Indianapolis after serving as assistant under Ed Schilling with the Park Tudor boys for three years.
She takes the place of new ISU assistant Sara Riedeman.
• Former Terre Haute North golfer Matt Cain is on the staff at Victoria National, site of a recent web.com tour event.
He hopes to try and qualify for another tour event next month.
• Mattoon (Ill.) volleyball standout Kacey Starwalt says she will sign with Butler. Her sister, Lindsey, played for ISU.
• Hard to believe — Clint Barmes is in his 10th season in the major leagues in baseball.
• J.R. Holmes, Rex Grossman and Steve Kinser are three inductees for the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame. Holmes, of course, is an ISU grad and boys basketball coach at Bloomington South.
• Former IU football player Antwan El Randle apparently will announce his retirement from pro football this week.

The prelims are over and the finals begin Thursday in the National Basketball Association with Miami going for a second straight title against San Antonio, looking for its first championship since 2007.
The Indiana Pacers gave the all-stars from Miami all they wanted and then some before the Heat took charge to win the seventh game Monday. -

The 97th running of the Indianapolis 500 and will be remembered as one of the best races in recent history.
