RAMBLIN' RECK: Beauty is at least one ‘underdog’ will be in final game

TERRE HAUTE — The Butler did it again.

Yep, the Butler Bulldogs are in the Final Four of the NCAA men’s basketball championship for the second straight year, knocking off Old Dominion, No. 1 seed Pittsburgh, Wisconsin and Florida.

They’ll face Virginia Commonwealth in the first semifinal game Saturday, setting up a matchup of two teams not from the so-called power conferences. Butler won the Horizon League tournament while VCU got an at-large bid from the Colonial Athletic Association.

Old Dominion and George Mason are the other CAA teams that were in the tournament.

The beauty of this Butler-VCU game is that one of them will be in the final game and have the chance to win the championship, meeting either Kentucky or Connecticut.

Go Dogs.

• Hall honors — Men with Indiana State, Rose-Hulman or Wabash Valley connections were honored as part of the annual Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame dinner last week.

Former ISU players Jim Powers and John Robbins were inducted into the Hall. Powers played in the 1940s and 1950 and was on the team that won the NAIB championship.

Robbins teamed with Johnny Dow to form one of the most exciting backcourts in school history in the 1960s.

Eddie Bird, Mark Jewell, Tim Cindric and Shawn Parrish were singled out as members of the Silver Anniversary team.

Bird played for Springs Valley High School and ISU. Jewell played for Terre Haute North before going to Lafayette Jeff, where he was named Mr. Basketball. He played college ball at Evansville.

Cindric played at Pike High School in Indy and at Rose-Hulman. He has held several positions with IndyCar teams since then and currently is president of Penske Racing. Parrish played at Owen Valley High School.



•In current girls basketball news, ISU recruit Jessica Valley of McCutcheon was named to the Indiana All-Stars. Bria Goss of Ben Davis is Miss Basketball.



• Tom-Cattin’ It — Former ISU player Clint Barmes apparently will miss the first four to six weeks of the baseball season with Houston.

He has a broken left hand as a result of being hit by a pitch by a New York Yankee pitcher on Friday.

• Missouri Valley teams are doing well in other postseason tournaments.

Illinois State is in the semifinals of the women’s NIT and Wichita State is in the semis of the men’s NIT, playing tonight in New York City; Creighton is playing Oregon in the best-of-three title series in the CBI Championship.

• Cody Zeller of Washington won the mental attitude award in the Class 3A finals. He ranks second in his class.

• Two high school seniors have signed to compete in collegiate athletics.

Mary Kate Etling of Terre Haute North will play volleyball at DePauw and D.J. Danner of North Central will run cross country at John Brown University in Arkansas.

Lawrence Central junior Jeremy Hollowell says he will play college ball at Indiana. The 6-foot-7 junior averaged 18.9 points this season.

• Oakland City finished fifth in the NCCAA national tournament. Owen Valley grad Jared Maners had 23 points in the final game and finished with 1,050 points at the school.

• Shalane Flanagan finished third in the cross country world championships, being just 12 seconds off the winning pace.

• Frank Kendrick has resigned as the boys baskeball coach at Indianapolis Tech, compiling a 14-29 mark in two years.

• Cory Cunningham of Paris is an honorable-mention pick on the Illinois Basketball Coaches Asssociation all-state team.
