INDIANAPOLIS —
Former Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell has landed a job as quarterbacks coach for the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens announced Caldwell’s hiring Monday.
Prior to becoming the Colts head coach in 2009, replacing Tony Dungy, Caldwell served as the team’s quarterbacks coach from 2002 to 2008. He’ll be working with Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco.
“After spending considerable time with Jim over the last week, we think he will be an excellent fit with our team, coaching the quarterbacks and helping with our offense,” Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said. “We believe he enhances our staff.”
Former Indiana coach and Terre Haute native Cam Cameron is the Ravens’ offensive coordinator. He was given a contract extension late last week.
“I am really excited to work with Coach Harbaugh, Cam and the rest of the coaching staff,” Caldwell said.
“It’s a great fit for me, and I’m happy they saw it that way. I can’t wait to get started with the Ravens, an organization that from top to bottom is one of the NFL’s best. I’m looking forward to coming to Baltimore.”
• Irsay talks to ESPN – During an interview with ESPN, Colts owner Jim Irsay discussed quarterback Peyton Manning’s situation with the team.
“This is not a knee, not a shoulder or an ankle. This is a neck. It’s my responsibility as an owner to make sure that if I’m going to put a player back on the field, that it’s in his best interest,” Irsay said.
He added that he has loyalty to Manning and won’t trade him but that he can’t afford to make a sentimental decision on Manning’s future with the team.
“This isn’t fantasy football,” Irsay said.
• Cooper Manning talks – The oldest of the Manning brothers, Cooper, spoke with NFL Network reporter Albert Breer recently. Cooper Manning said that Peyton Manning is determined to get back on the field as soon as possible.
“I think [determined] is a great word for it,” Cooper said. “What I do know is Peyton is going to do every single thing a human being can possibly do to get ready to play again.
“Where, when and how he’ll play, that’s all up in the air. But as far as his body goes, Peyton’s smart, he’ll know what to do. Anyone predicting what will happen now going forward is just wasting their breath. But he is working as hard as anyone can work to get out there again.”
He added that he didn’t think that there was any ill will between Peyton and Irsay in the wake of their public statements over the past week.
“I honestly don’t think Peyton meant anything beyond what he said,” Cooper said. “[They’ve] talked, so I think everything’s fine there.”
• Big crowds – Super Bowl host committee chairman Mark Miles said Monday that approximately 200,000 people have been at the Super Bowl village and 100,000 at the NFL Experience.
The initial reviews for Indianapolis as the host city for Super Bowl XLVI have been relatively good.
Many of the national and international media on hand this week have been impressed by the close proximity of the media center to the teams’ hotels and Lucas Oil Stadium, as well as the event’s overall hospitality.
• Another Indy Super Bowl? – The general consensus is that Indianapolis should be included in the regular Super Bowl rotation from now on.
That isn’t likely to happen, although the 2014 Super Bowl is set for the new Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey. Usually the NFL prefers warm-weather locales, such as Miami, New Orleans, Houston, Arizona, San Diego and Los Angeles.
How about a Super Bowl in London?
It might happen.
“There’s a little bit of change in philosophy,” Irsay said Monday. “We have the 50-year anniversary [of the league] coming up, which we’re looking at.
“There are some members of our committee who have been thinking about having an international Super Bowl in London. That obviously has some real pluses and minuses if you weren’t going to have it on American soil. Right now, we’re in a wait-and-see approach.”
• On the flip side – While many Indianapolis Colts fans are showing the Giants plenty of support heading into Sunday’s game with New England, a few members of the team’s media corps aren’t returning the favor.
The New York Daily News started out Super Bowl week by publishing a column that rehashed Indianapolis’ old “Nap Town” image and warned Giants fans making the trip what to expect.
According to columnist Filip Bondy, there wasn’t a lot to do in the city, finding a cab downtown was next to impossible and he joked about the state’s confusing time zones. He also had fun at the expense of IUPUI, the NCAA’s Hall of Champions and the Canal Walk.
