Inmates should pay own way

In a recent paper (Monday, Dec. 3, 2012) on page A4, the second headline was a continuation from page one, “Pot: Is kid caught with joint in his pocket worth prison dollars?”

Well, maybe not prison, but reform school at least.

Let me tell you what is not worth my tax dollars that go toward the prison expenses: the food, clothes, medical services and educational services for child molesters, rapist, abusers of any kind, murderers, and any others who commit horrible crimes.

I am 65 years old and have worked and paid taxes since I was 16, and I don’t like to support in any way these criminals. Let them work for what they get, or don’t let them have it.

The prisons, both state and federal, should implement some type of industry that would be beneficial to the people of the state in which they are located and make these criminals work for their food, clothes, medical services and educational services, and if they don’t make enough to pay for it, they don’t get it. Or really use the death penalty, especially for child molesters, rapists and murderers, not years and years of appeals at the taxpayers’ expense. One appeal and then that is it.

Why should we have to pay for these criminals? Let them pay for themselves and their mistakes.

Helping everyone improve health

We at the Minority Health Coalition of Vigo County wish to thank all of the providers who participated in our first annual Getting Healthy for the Holidays Health Fair on Friday, Nov. 30. It was a huge success with many people getting screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and vision. Great health information was provided by all of the agencies. The Vigo County Health Department is to be commended for offering 75 free flu shots.

We were able to offer door prizes every half hour. Thank you to Bob Baesler of Baesler’s for providing everyone who attended with a $5  certificate and for four gift cards as door prizes. Door prizes were also provided by Sam’s Club, Area 7 Agency on Aging, The Maple Center, Homey’s, and Diana Carole Hart donated three Mary Kay gift certificates.

Holidays are beautiful and stressful. We appreciate all you did to help make this a better and healthier holiday season for the community.
