TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute’s status as a regional retail center for the 10- to 12-county area of west-central Indiana and east-central Ilinois means steady shopping traffic into commercial districts virtually year-round.
But on a day such as today — the busiest shopping day of the year known as “Black Friday” — that flow of shoppers becomes more of an invasion. And to the prospects of the eager hoards from here and yon arriving with long shopping lists, boundless energy and money to spend, we say, bring it on!
By the time you pick up this newspaper, many will have already experienced the rush of excitement as the doors to their favorite stores opened to throngs of bargain-hunters and deal-seekers. In fact, the rush began Thanksgiving evening as a few stores got a jump on things with an early opening. Some shoppers may even be finished by now, if you can imagine that.
No, Black Friday isn’t just another shopping day. It’s an outright adventure into the retail universe on its biggest day.
We’re confident the parking lots at Terre Haute’s many and various shopping centers were packed with vehicles. They always are on Black Friday.
While we acknowledge that plunging into the madness today isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time, the season doesn’t start and end on one day alone. This peak shopping season will last through the Christmas holiday. Stores and shopping centers will be quite busy in coming weeks, but nothing like today.
Retail sales are a key barometer of local economic health, so we hope cash registers are ringing steadily. It’s been a tough few years and the area could use a boost. Shop on!
