EDITORIAL: Another big year for UWWV

Fundraising goal once again shattered, and we all benefit

While it would not be totally fair to call the United Way of the Wabash Valley a fundraising “machine” because of its systematic production, year after year, of charitable donations for worthy causes, its performance is something at which to be marveled.

What’s not fair about the characterization is that the cogs that make this organization work so well are not inanimate objects grinding together to churn out positive results. They are human beings who care, who contribute sweat and blood — not to mention money — so that 31 member agencies can go about their business of helping people in need and improving life in the Wabash Valley for everyone.

The United Way showed its true colors again Monday night at its annual banquet in Hulman Center when it revealed it had met — and surpassed — its 2012 fundraising goal of $1.86 million. The announced tally: more than $1.96.

A remarkable accomplishment, to be sure.

This marked the third consecutive year this United Way chapter was able to meet its goal. Despite economic conditions that continue to be tough here and beyond, it was able to raise a significant sum of money for agencies that deliver vital social services to vulnerable families and children.

This says a lot about communities of the Wabash Valley and their people, who recognize that needs exist and are willing to donate to help meet them. This sustained commitment shows that they have trust and faith in United Way as the proper vehicle to deliver funds to its member agencies.

United Way of the Wabash Valley continues to succeed because it has a strong base of community volunteers to assist its skilled and experienced staff. Once again, we commend Executive Director Troy Fears and his team of professionals for their efforts, and we applaud the exceptional work of Campaign Chair Claudia Tanoos and Board President Sally Zuel for leading the organization through the fundraising process.

What’s more, we salute the people who give generously. Their willingness to share means that others in the community can live better, more productive lives.
