No such thing as ‘free’ grant

I feel certain the residents of Danville, Ill., would prefer $2.8 million be spent on security in schools than on a 1,000-square-foot bus transfer station.

Yet, the system of free grants will ensure Danville will have a new bus stop, courtesy of the Illinois Department of Transportation; and because the DOT spent it, a new $2.8 million will be in their 2014 budget.

Danville can add that nonsense to the $750,000 of nonsense they delightfully received to build an “environmentally friendly” parking lot from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

And if Danville residents want more protection for their school kids, in all likelihood, their taxes will be increased “because Illinois is broke.”

Danville is not alone. The residents of Terre Haute (and similar-sized cities) send over $6.1 million annually to the federal Department of Energy so they can “delightfully” get an occasional grant; like the $700,000 for new street lights two years ago.

It would be impossible to explain such illogical happenings to even the most intelligent of immigrants, but, heck, Americans just accept it, never complaining to anyone except the guys at the lunch table.

Look, no one likes to get cold waiting on a bus; it has happened to all of us, especially country kids. It is not about that; it’s about localities having control; it’s about priorities; it’s about wasteful government spending of money.

The notion of “free” grants is like an addictive drug; at some point we just need to say, “No!”

Gun control will not make us safer

Shirley Thomas, in your letter to the editor of Jan. 10, what you stated about gun control was this, and I quote: “Will this stop the black market for guns? No. Will this stop criminals from getting guns? No. What it will do is make this nation safer for all of the law-abiding citizens and leave protection to those qualified to do it such as the police and soldiers.”

If gun control does not stop the black market for guns or stop criminals from getting guns, how does this make your nation safer? Shirley, your law-abiding citizens do not need gun control, violent criminals need gun control. Your view of the ordinary citizens in this country is very bleak. Gun control in many other countries around the world has not made those countries safer. The citizens in those countries have become less safe.

I think you should look at what morality has been taught or is being taught by parents and churches and schools and even our own government. It is the morality of the person having a gun that determines what he or she chooses to do with the gun. It is not the gun. Gun control by our government does not make morality nor does it develop a moral person or non-violent person. Nor will gun control make for a safer society.
