EDITORIAL: Noteworthy in the news

Deadly season finally ends

The construction season on Interstate 70 in 2012 was long, difficult and, on too many occasions, tragic.

The freeway between Terre Haute in Vigo County and Indianapolis in Marion County has been under rehabilitation for most of the past two years. The reconstructed lanes, shoulders and bridges will eventually produce a far safer and more modern interstate. But the traffic mishaps that occurred during the process are an unacceptable side effect.

It’s not that the construction zones themselves can be blamed for the 13 deaths on I-70 so far this year, although there is no denying that the presence of construction zones contributed. The real problem is that heavy traffic flow on this interstate creates a variety of potential and ever-present dangers. Unfortunately, too many drivers lose their focus while speeding along these high-speed corridors. The minor mistakes that sometimes result from brief bouts of inattention can turn into major problems. The margin for error is small.

We hope 2013 is a safer period as final phases of the I-70 reconstruction are completed. And we hope that if there are lessons to be learned from the deadly 2012 season, that all involved and affected will learn and put them into practice.

Lane restrictions in the I-70 construction zone end Saturday. We are certain every traveler who traverses that route will welcome the break.

You can say that again

“My expectation is to live every day as champions.”

— Mike Sanford, Indiana State University’s

new football coach
