LIZ CIANCONE: Maybe the Cubs will win it all next year

I was relieved to have the World Series ending before the snow flies. Heck, it didn’t even last into November this year.

The Series drew a bit of a yawn among the regulars at the Sports Center — Pottsie in particular. He is a raving Cardinals fan and was much encouraged when the Redbirds pulled a minor miracle and drew a wild card to make it into the semifinals. They gave it a good try, but failed to make it to the big dance after falling one game shy of the Giants. I suppose it is comfort of a sort that the Giants swept the series from Detroit, but you can’t prove it by Potts.

Now that baseball season is over, my Best Friend can begin counting the days until spring training and the onset of another season.

As usual we will be cheering for the Cubs. I keep telling my BF that this is a case of hope triumphing over experience. On the other hand, without hope where would we be? Even Potts assured my BF that when the Cardinals are not involved, he will root for the Cubs. They do pretty well being self-cast as the lovable losers, but an extra cheer couldn’t hurt.

Sometimes the minds of Chicago sports fans baffles me. The Chicago Bulls pulled off several consecutive championships in the NBA. That was enough for fans to run amok and overturn a few cars, but that’s a given whoever wins. The Bears have brought home a few Super Bowl rings and the fans are there for them. Even the Blackhawks skate to some impressive wins, but somehow only the Cubs continue to fill the ballpark season after season even when it seems they couldn’t score enough runs to beat Jones Junior High.

It’s my fault. I should have seen the handwriting on the wall. I think our first date was to a movie biography of Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch. I’d never heard of him, but enjoyed my BF’s company enough too attend a basketball double-header at Chicago Stadium. For his ultimate test of our relationship, he took me to a season opener at Wrigley Field. It snowed!

I’ve learned a bit about football and baseball since but have never really taken to basketball. I’ve become a Cubs fan and — probably like Potts who anticipates big things from the Cardinals — I am hopeful for the Cubs in the 2013 season.

We’ve been waiting for more than 100 years. Maybe the year 13 will be lucky for the Cubbies.
