Eagles seek help

to fight diabetes

Since 1898, The fraternal Order of Eagles has been an influential part of society aiding in the creation of Mother’s Day, Social Security, Medicare, and taking action to improve the lives of countless U.S. and Canadian citizens.

Four years ago, members of the Eagles set out to tackle diabetes with the same drive and passion displayed by those who came before us. The result was the unanimous approval of a five-year, $25 million pledge to the University of Iowa to create The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center.

Throughout November, we’re honoring American Diabetes Month in an effort to further our quest to find a cure. Since 2008, Eagles have contributed nearly $20 million to the cause; with 100 percent of the funds directly benefiting research.

Though our facility will not open until early 2014, our contributions have already made significant breakthroughs. Who could have known the key to curing diabetes just might rest in the peel of a Fuji apple? Nobody, without the help of the Eagles.

Diabetes may affect eye sight, kidney function or circulation, but, as we’ve discovered, it will never affect the power of the human spirit. From our youth to our elders, we’ve come to learn the inspiring stories of countless individuals and their families who fight with great pride and courage each day to live a life as normal as diabetes will allow.

We are proud to be a part of the search to find a cure for diabetes and we welcome people across the United States and Canada to join us as we aim to bring an end to the suffering of millions around the world. Join us at www.foe.com.

Letters reinforce

conservative view

Thank you, Shirley!

I have never had second thoughts about being a conservative Republican. If I ever did, Shirley Thomas’ letters would quickly reinforce my conservative ideas about politics.

Shirley, you evidently do not realize that what you think are strengths of the Democratic party are actually weaknesses. Anyone who is unsure of which party to support will quickly turn to the Republicans after reading one of your letters.

Your pathetic attempt to demonize the conservative movement only strengthens us. Keep up the good work.
