Congress should live like rest of us

Finally, I’ve discovered something that both Democrats and Republicans in Congress agree on. They agree that they deserve $174,000 incomes with the right to vote themselves a raise anytime they please at taxpayer expense. They agree that they deserve lifetime pensions at taxpayer expense. They agree they have the right to travel anywhere in the world anytime they choose at taxpayer expense. They agree to have the right to take off every holiday on the calendar including a month at Christmas time at taxpayer expense. They agree they can go to the best doctors and hospitals in the country with little or no out-of-pocket costs at taxpayer expense. They agree that they have the right to a free haircut and shave at the cost of $300,000 a year at taxpayer expense. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

If any of you Congressman have the guts, tells us taxpayers how many more perks you receive at taxpayer expense.

To you Republicans who are struggling to stay in business in this economy: Could you stay in business hiring employees who accomplish nothing and receive huge income and benefits.

To you Democrats who are struggling to feed your families on the few good paying jobs left in this country: Would you trade your 401k or your medical plan for a congressman’s wages and benefits?

When you congressmen agree to live like the rest of America, then maybe we can all agree on what really needs to be cut.

Terre Haute

School safety is well understood

Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary would like to take the time to thank the Vigo County Council, Sheriff Greg Ewing, and the Vigo County School Corp. for working together to pass the bill supporting the placement school resource officers in the elementary buildings. The collaboration and willingness to figure out what is best for our children between all parties shows what a wonderful community we live in.

Additionally, our students feel protected and have developed a greater appreciation for what the police do for us each day. Although we are a small rural community, we are also not too naive to believe that a senseless tragedy could not ever happen here, and are aware of the much quicker response time there would be if the police were ever needed. The protection that the sheriff’s office will provide allows my students, staff, and parents to feel that they and their family members are safe as they kiss their loved ones goodbye each morning.

The countless hours councilmen spent traveling to schools and talking to principals and other employees shows their willingness to listen and make the best decisions possible. The County Council, sheriff’s department, and school corporation understand that the safety of our students is of top priority, and for that we are forever grateful.

After seeing Dick on TV, it dawned on me that all schools I had attended in Clinton have been torn down.
