RONN MOTT’S MINUTE: Driving

TERRE HAUTE — I love driving in Terre Haute. It sharpens my reflex actions, keeps me mentally alert, tests my patience, and has taught me to swallow the profanity that would come forth when being angry at other drivers.

My, oh my, where do they get these drivers’ licenses?

Driving north on Ninth Street (for those who do not know, it is a one-way going north), I was in the right-hand lane between Ohio and Wabash when a car driven by a lady came out of an alley between the fire station and the building north of it. The car began to pull out and make a turn to the south which was, of course, against the flow of traffic going north. I jammed on my brakes and choked down my immediate response to yell something and motored on. I wondered why someone in the middle of the day, a bright sunny day, would turn against the on-going traffic. And then I saw her clutching a cell phone and chatting away.

I guess her eyesight and my quick reflexes kept an accident from happening. And I was reminding myself there is a hubbub going on about doing things that are distracting while driving. This looked like an obvious case of distraction.

Another thing that occurs with a great deal of frequency is drivers in Terre Haute running red lights. Now everybody knows running a red light is against the law, but those short seconds between yellow and red keep many drivers pushing ahead just to get across the intersection before the light changes.

So it seems to me, if you’re driving in our fair city, you shouldn’t bolt out when your light turns green. Give it two or three seconds to make sure no one is trying to break the world’s record of getting through a red light.

Do I think I’m a great driver? Oh, no, I am not. But at my age I’m doing well … probably because Terre Haute tests me almost every day.
