Opportunity to protect habitats

Recent letters to the editor and news articles have expounded the virtues of protecting wetlands in Indiana and the Wabash Valley. State Conservationist Jane Hardisty (“Flashpoint”, June 1) told us of the fantastic positive impact that Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area has made on the local population of bird species and the “power of wetlands” — not to mention the economic impacts every time a rare bird alert attracts bird watchers by the carload to Linton.

A letter from the Indiana Wildlife Federation (May 27) goes further and promotes that we hunters, bird watchers and conservationists voice our opinion to help conserve the wildlife habitat of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska as it is opened for gas and oil drilling.

You might not think that a 22 million acre reserve in Alaska would have much impact on wildlife in the Wabash Valley. However, without the nesting, staging and molting habitat provided by the reserve, the healthy bird populations at wetlands, such as Vigo County’s Wabashiki Fish & Wildlife Area and Greene County’s Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area, could not occur.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that there are only about 500 million barrels of economically recoverable oil in the Reserve; which is less than a one-month supply at current consumption rates. Therefore, I echo the Indiana Wildlife Federation’s plea to tell the Bureau of Land Management that what happens in Alaska matters greatly to the citizens of Indiana. Please consider the enormity of the possibility of 22 million acres of wildlife habitat being compromised for such a feeble short-term gain. Ask that the BLM choose “Alternative B” as the management approach that best protects the critical wildlife habitat of so many bird species that give us great joy and remind us of our heritage right here in the Wabash Valley.

The deadline for comments concerning the “National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska Draft Integrated Activity Plan/Environmental Impact Statement” has been extended to Friday, June 15. If you care about wildlife and the environment, I urge you to make your opinion known through the Indiana Wildlife Federation’s website: www.indianawildlife.org/IN_AKconnection.htm.

No matter how you try to spin the results, it was a great day for the people of Wisconsin. It was also a great day for the American people as we move forward to reclaim our country and put it on the right path again toward prosperity.
