EDITORIAL: ‘Uncharted territory’

Dry conditions require all of us to pay attention

TERRE HAUTE — Portions of Indiana and the Wabash Valley have had a few downpours of rain in recent days. Other than momentary relief from the withering Midwest drought of 2012, they haven’t helped much.

In fact, things seem to be getting worse by the day. We may soon be confronted with a new definition of “dry.” And if you haven’t taken personal notice of the conditions and their potential effects on many facets of life, it’s time you do so.

The Department of Homeland Security placed the entire state under a water shortage warning Tuesday. Agency leaders don’t mince words when they call deteriorating conditions “uncharted territory.”

State officials are asking those who use 100,000 gallons of water or more daily to cut usage by 10 to 15 percent. That’s a reasonable request, and only addresses large-quantity users.

What’s more, it would be wise for everyone to being taking steps to, in some way, conserve water. While the drought could ease at any time, it’s more likely that things will get worse before they get better.

The drought is taking a heavy toll on reservoirs around the state, and curtailing water usage is a responsible step all businesses and citizens can take.

As dry conditions persist, it’s also important for Hoosiers to stay vigilant about issues related to fire. In addition to observing all burn bans, motorists should remember that it is unlawful to flick cigarettes, cigars, matches or other burning materials from a moving motor vehicle. If you need more incentive, state troopers have been urged by their superior officers to enforce those laws.

State Police officials say they’ve already issued 200 citations for such infractions, a pace that exceeds previous years. They also report that several significant fires have resulted from discarded smoking materials.

Nature will take its course, and the drought will subside. But until it does, people need to be aware of their surroundings, and their responsibilities, so as not to make a bad situation worse.
