Catchy chorus, but details are in the verses

Once again (Tribune-Star, Sept. 4), U.S. Rep. Larry Bucshon has invited us to join him in a Republican chorus of “Regulations Bad, Business Good,” (sung to the tune of “This Land is Your Land” by Peter, Paul and Mary). Though I could not resist humming along with Larry’s letter to the editor, I felt that the letter might have been more compelling if it had mentioned some regulations that are particularly onerous. Though I would never presume to speak for Larry, I will try to use his reasoning.

Eliminate EPA’s air pollution standards. We don’t regulate farts. Corporations are people, too, so they should have the same right to the air. It doesn’t matter that Indiana ranks among the top six states for emission of toxic pollutants such as mercury, arsenic, lead, nickel, chromium, and selenium. Bad gas is bad gas.

Get rid of the new regulations on carbon-dioxide emissions. Carbon dioxide is a natural substance, and it’s clear. How can clear be bad? All the noise about global warming leading to crop failures and severe weather is just so much hot air. Hoosiers know that there is no evidence supporting global warming.

Repeal the Dodd-Frank financial reform law. Banks have learned their lesson and should not be restrained by even the most tepid regulations. Blind trust is the key. The recent $4.4 billion dalliance by JPMorgan Chase was just a blip. Now and again, everyone places a bet to cover a bet and then hedges with several more bets. Besides, America’s big banks are grateful for your ongoing contributions to the bailout and truly regret any inconvenience caused by the foreclosures.

Purge food-safety regulations. Recalling a million pounds of infected beef is just ridiculous. Just cook the meat; for a really, really long time. If some bacteria survive, who cares? My doctor told me that the body has a mechanism to stop bacteria that enter forcibly. Industry self-regulation, that’s the ticket.

Gosh, there are many more bad regulations to write about, but the editor won’t publish my letter if it’s too long. Just let me say the that elimination of these regulations will certainly enrich my daughter … who will be disowned if she spends her windfall on Obamacare or reproductive health.

The last high school I attended was being torn down just a few days ago. I didn't learn about it until I saw classmate Dick Mills on television and a display he had put together about State football championships in the middle 1930's. I began elementary school with Dick Mills. That was Matthew South Elementary School on South Sixth Street in Clinton, Indiana. After seeing Dick on TV, it dawned on me that all schools I had attended in Clinton have been torn down.
