RONN MOTT: A look backwards

Christmas has come and gone and I’m writing this before the New Year. It may dawn with the fools in Congress saving us from the economic “cliff.” I would like it to happen but I’m not very hopeful. The rest of the world looks at our mess and wonders how this can be. Grover Norquist, who is not an elected official and has no association with our national government, owns so many congressmen he controls the House of Representatives. They who have signed pledges to him not to raise taxes under any circumstances receive support from his organization, Americans for Tax Reform, and if they do vote to raise taxes, he has promised to work to defeat them in their next election. This man cannot be voted against because he is not an elected official, but the right-wing officials who hold hands with Grover Norquist can certainly be voted against. Please keep this in mind when your taxes go up and this fragile economy hits another skid because the American Congress is worse than a group of petulant children.

A tip of our hat goes to the creative crew at WTHI-TV who gave us a different look and sound at Christmas when they said Happy Holidays to us with their “flash mob.”

At our house, we learned that giving our most energetic male cat catnip for Christmas was not the best idea. It took approximately 24 hours before “Magic” calmed down. My guess is it will be the last time he gets catnip in his stocking.

My daughter called me after the Newtown massacre. She was in tears. She said, “How do I explain this to people in Canada who are not allowed to have guns? I hurt so badly for the parents of these small children.” I have a friend who teaches Kindergarten in Wisconsin and she, too, came to tears when discussing it with me via the telephone. For my money, it’s almost too stupid to think about defending, yet the President of the NRA and the Executive Director and Vice President of the NRA, have been on television doing that very thing.

I hope the last two snows we have received, and by the time you read this you may have gone through more, haven’t dampened your spirits for the New Year, which may be a really tough one. So we hope you are ready for it.  In this coming early part of the New Year, we will see two educational institutions vying for the title of Champion in American football. I hope Notre Dame wins and the folks in South Bend and elsewhere who cheer for the Fighting Irish have that glow to bask in until the next football season.

While we are at the sports’ trough, kudos to Greg Lansing and the Indiana State Sycamores for playing good basketball in Hawaii and gearing up for the very tough Missouri Valley Conference play. By the time you read this, the MVC action will be under way.

I wish for 2013 to be happy and prosperous for you and yours.
