TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute should understand the rarity of an opportunity to celebrate a championship.
Though the city holds a rich high school basketball tradition, the community went decades without a state championship until the Terre Haute South girls won the Indiana High School Athletic Association crown in 2002, and no other Vigo County team has won it since. When the Indiana State University basketball team reached the NCAA Final in 1979, after winning the Missouri Valley Conference title, many locals thought the momentum would allow the Sycamores to pile up MVC crowns, year after year. It took them 21 years to win another.
With that in mind, the ISU baseball team’s home series with Missouri State this weekend should be a moment to relish for Terre Haute. The Sycamores locked up their first regular-season Missouri Valley championship since 1985 with Thursday night’s victory over the Bears in the series opener at Bob Warn Field. ISU also solidified its chances of playing in the NCAA Tournament. To earn their conference’s automatic NCAA berth, the Sycamores need to win the upcoming Missouri Valley Conference Tournament next week at Springfield, Mo. Their 41 regular-season victories so far could bring the Sycamores an at-large berth in college baseball’s big dance, if they fall short at Springfield.
The wait for such a season has lingered for more than a generation. The last time the name “Indiana State” stood atop the standings at the end of the MVC’s regular season, coach Bob Warn — namesake of the school’s current field — had one of the Midwest’s powerhouse college programs. His 1985 team won a school-record 57 games, and a year later Warn’s Sycamores reached the College World Series. ISU has never been back to that plateau.
With current coach Rick Heller and his players now treading similar turf as Warn’s ’85 team, local folks should savor the situation. The ongoing series with Missouri State — the final regular-season matchup — marks the last chance to see this Sycamore team play at home. Tickets are beyond affordable, at $2 for general admission and $5 for chairback seats. The weather forecast looks gorgeous, with mostly sunny skies and evening temperatures in the 70s.
Though we hope the Sycamores will return to their status from their heyday under Warn in the 1970s-and-’80s, we also realize there are no guarantees in sports. Our suggestion is to live in the present and cheer on the Sycamores this weekend.
