TRIBUNE-STAR EDITORIAL: ‘Men’ cooked up huge donation for Children’s Museum

TERRE HAUTE — The community spirit of the Wabash Valley was again on display Saturday night with the second annual “100 Men Who Cook” event to benefit the Terre Haute Children’s Museum.

After last year’s event raised over $58,000, it seemed that it would be hard to top that number. But the good folks of the community stepped up and contributed more than $85,000. The crowd was able to enjoy samples of salads, main dishes and side dishes as well as desserts that covered the gambit. The celebrity chefs prepared dishes and showcased their cooking skills to serve more than 600 hungry diners.

The event was spearheaded by Don Schroeder of Old National Bank and a committee of folks that worked hard to ensure a successful event. In addition to the table tickets and tips for the chefs, there were live auctions that included sporting tickets, certificates for food and even a car. They were able to find more than 100 men willing to put their culinary proficiency on display. Attendees were able to partake in samples of the wonderful dishes and in many cases rewarded their favorites with tips of appreciation.

The “People’s Choice” winners were Rick Burger, George Azar, Barry Martin, Greg Winchester, Bill Doan and John Thompson. They achieved that honor by generating the most tips for their offerings.

It is great to be in a community that is as caring and giving as the folks of the Wabash Valley. Congratulations to the Terre Haute Children’s Museum and the event committee for a job well done. Congratulations to the “100 Men” and the people who attended the event for helping a great cause. Everyone should be commended for their generosity and caring spirit. Good job, and bon appetite.
