Another ‘Miracle’ about to unfold

“Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the world, and the genial Flame of charity in the heart,” wrote Washington Irving, and indeed Christmas and all the magic it holds is quickly approaching.

Along with the opening of the Christmas season comes the fourth edition of the “Miracle on Seventh Street” festival and Christmas Marketplace. The merchants and businesses of downtown Terre Haute, especially those centered around the Crossroads of America, decided in 2009 to attempt to recapture the same nostalgic feel of childhood Christmases reminiscent of downtown Terre Haute, circa 1960.

Thus the “Miracle on Seventh Street” was born. From that inaugural event in 2009 with 5,000 attendees, the event has grown dramatically with last year’s event drawing over 10,000 attendees.

Plans were immediately begun to both expand and improve the event. This year the “Miracle” looks to expand both the canned food and money drive. We are again asking everyone, especially children, to bring a few canned food items suitable for Christmas baskets. The food and the money collected that evening by the St. Benedict Church Youth Group volunteers under the direction of Janet Roth will be split among the 14th & Chestnut Community Center, the St. Ben’s Christmas Baskets and the Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund. We anticipate the proceeds will have a positive impact on nearly 500 Wabash Valley families.

Janice Maeditere said, “Christmas is not so much about opening presents as opening our hearts.” Bring a few extra dollars to share with those among us who are less fortunate this holiday season.

This year we have added a new fourth tent to help accommodate the increased number of craft vendors. The new tent (all tents are heated) will be “Santa’s Hide-A- Way,” a North Pole edition of a “Man Cave.” It will feature football on a giant TV screen provided by Ovation. Gift cards from several downtown merchants will be sold in the tent as perfect gifts and stocking stuffers.

We not only want to thank all the incredibly generous people and businesses for their support, but want to remind and invite you to attend this year’s fourth annual “Miracle on Seventh Street, A Christmas Bazaar and Celebration” on Friday, Dec. 7, from 5 to 10 p.m. Seventh Street will be closed between Wabash and Ohio as well as Wabash Avenue from Seventh to Eighth streets. Heated tents will line those areas with the Holiday Marketplace. Virtually every business, from the Vigo County Library on the south end to Clabber Girl on the north end, will be open with special events and holiday fun.

Admission is free to all outdoor events and just some of the events include:

• See Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive on a city fire truck.

• Art show and sale at Heinl’s.

• First Friday at the local art museums and galleries.

• Breakfast Optimist Club Poinsettia Sale.

• Local weavers and gifts at River Wools.

• Window-decorating contest for downtown businesses.

• Holiday gifts, treats and gift cards.

• Photos with Santa at Mic’s Pics.

• A chance to send a letter to Santa at the Children’s Museum.

• A live reindeer.

• The gingerbread house building contest at the Indiana Theatre sponsored by Century 21 Advantage.

• The ISU Madrigal Singers on the street.

• Dinner at one of eight downtown restaurants.

• Christmas trees decorated by 20 not-for-profit agencies sponsored by Terre Haute Savings Bank and Frontier Communications.

• Children’s cookie decorating at Clabber Girl bakery.

• Christmas music on the street provided by Ovation.

• Christmas tree lighting at 6:15 p.m.

Please stop by the “Miracle Center” at Seventh and Wabash to pick up your free event and activities guide, complete with a map.

I’ll close with the the words of Charles Dickens: “Happy, happy Christmas, that can bring us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasure of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the traveler, thousands of miles away, back to his fireside and his quiet home.”

Health fair set for this Friday

On Friday, the Minority Health Coalition of Vigo County will be hosting “Getting Healthy for the Holidays” Community Health Fair. The fair will be held in the gymnasium of the Booker T. Washington Community Center located at 1101 S. 13th Street. It will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 4 p.m.

Our health is vital, and the Minority Health Coalition wants to make information, education and screenings available to help everyone get healthy and stay healthy over the holidays.

A number of providers will be participating and some of them are: Union Hospital, Regional Hospital, Area 7 Agency on Aging, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, CHANCES, Sam’s Club, Apria Home Health, the Vigo County Health Department, the WILL Center, Planned Parenthood, Hamilton Center, Casey and much more. Numerous screenings, education and information will be provided. Some of the screenings include glucose, vision, blood pressure and cancer.

Every person who attends will receive a $5 gift card to Baesler’s. Every hour, a name will be drawn for a door prize. In order to be eligible for door prize, the person must be present at the time of the drawing.
