TERRE HAUTE —
Loving your mom life-long devotion
I was simply delighted to read the letter published in the May 10 newspaper written by Mr. James R. Sink about Mother’s Day. Women are the spine of the human race. We see the same thing even in the animal world as the mothers protect their cubs with ferocity and also teach them to survive in the wild world.
God with His eternal wisdom left this responsibility of bearing the children for nine months or more and bearing all the discomfort and pain with such love and patience.
People do not know that our babies are born soccer players. In the later months of pregnancy the mothers bear great discomfort when the babies practice kicking and the mothers play with them with great pleasure. I can tell that as I was trained in obstetrics and gynecology and also as a mother.
In this country, this noble Mother’s Day has been commercialized so much, which I dislike. Loving your mother or father should be a life-long love and devotion. It should not be cheapened by giving a card, flowers or taking them to a restaurant for a meal. It is all about devotion, care and love.
Happy Mother’s Day to you all.

Opinions should be based on facts
The seemingly shallow and pointless letter from Mr. Dean May, regarding civil liberties, was recently printed for voluntary reading. The fact that the letter was printed (and that this response may be printed), is evidence that the “freedom of speech” is recognized.
However, the Tribune-Star editors reserve the ethical and legal responsibility to print letters that are enlightening, informative, and appropriate to the community interests. No letter will be printed that is offensive to the Tribune-Star, the community, or the original writer.
Mr. May suggests that the U.S. Secret Service, in his opinion and with no facts presented, violated the civil rights of a citizen. Big deal! The opinion means nothing without further, factual illumination. The freedom of speech is legally regulated by the courts to deter the following (but is not limited to these offenses): hate speech, to protect individual rights to privacy, to enforce the tort laws against defamation, and to fulfill the people’s government promises found in the preamble to the U.S. Constitution — to establish justice, and to ensure domestic tranquility.
Perhaps Mr. May has relevant information that can shed light and promote a constructive dialogue about civil rights, and what truly constitutes the violation of same. The irony of his letter is that it was printed; hence acknowledging the Tribune-Star’s approving, free speech judgment.
Mr. May possibly will want to express fact-based concerns, if for no other reason than to correct the image of being uninformed and unenlightened, and anti-liberty and justice. As established by our Constitution, the greatest good for the majority always “trumps” the lone, howling, paranoid-like fears of the few.
To invoke concepts like, leviathan, Orwellian, and un-American, in the context presented, suggests the author has a disjointed and misguided view of American civil liberties, and what is “American.”
The privileges attendant to living in America require each of us to accept and fulfill the obligations and responsibilities provided in the Bill of Rights.
