RONN MOTT: Collett Park watching on a winter day

It’s easy for me to be a watcher on the Park. I live across the street from Collett Park, and so I have an opportunity to be an observer of the goings-on there.

The other day the snow had not gone yet, but the roads and sidewalks were very clear and the temperature was acceptable for outdoor activity.

A young woman was riding a bicycle around the park on the roadways and sidewalks and was being followed by two small children on very tiny bicycles. My guess is the bikes were Christmas presents. They were brightly colored in pink and they had that shiny example of newness about them.

Now, I suppose because they were pink bicycles, very small, the two small children riding them were girls. But, from the distance I was sitting, I could not tell. The lady was whipping by on her bike and these two little kids going in a row after her were just cuter than all get out. It was reminiscent of a mother duck and two ducklings following close by.

Only this time, it was a human lady and two small children. It was a warm sight to see. The little pink bicycles and the two children, evidently about 3- or 4-years-old, certainly pre-school, were having a grand time following the lady on the bigger bicycle. I assumed it was their mother, and this sight was one of those warm, fuzzy-feeling sights that make you feel good because of where you were and what you were seeing.

It wasn’t a grand, glorious thing, no fireworks or a big-band concert, or a contest for older cars. It was a mother and two little kids riding their bikes and looking very good on a sun-lit day in Collett Park.

I think it was one of my best days recently of park-watching, and it is exactly what our city parks are for.
