Time to abolish Electoral College

What can a popular vote mean or any other vote mean when you get this cumbersome arrangement that can trump and nullify the results on election day?

I am targeting the Electoral College vote, which allows anonymous delegates to take control of elections and elect whomever they dang please.

This odious system has been with us for over two centuries, ever since the founding fathers came up with this wacky mess. It must have been that the framers of the constitution did not quite trust the ordinary voters to make the right decisions, and also to take control of the vote.

After all, the founding fathers were no angels themselves. They owned slaves, used their wealth to gain power, used that power to gain more wealth, and sought to extend their own family rule for generations ahead.

When an election is close, even as narrow as one vote, this wretched system allows committed delegates to vote any way they want to. We don’t even know their motives. This miserable set of rules allows a few anonymous characters (delegates) to nix millions of popular votes, turn things upside down, and vote the opposite direction.

I bring to mind a terrible misboggle, the 2000 election. Al Gore had a great number of popular votes over G.W. Bush, yet a murky and suspicious count in Florida tweaked the electoral votes to Bush. This has to be a national shame. Sure, Gore was no whiz of a statesman, but I am here defining the despicable method of selecting a president, not the character of the man.

Oh, by the way, we had eight miserable years to define Bush, yet the Electoral College wrought its stupidity.

It would be a landmark upgrade in American history if we just got rid of the Electoral College.
