RONN MOTT’S MINUTE: Confused

I am confused. For those who know me, that is not an unusual state. But, while listening to a political commercial on TV, I heard the announcer say the candidate was “real conservative.” If he is a “real conservative,” is someone not quite a “real conservative” an “unreal conservative”?

Now, because we live in a “red” state, we probably won’t have too many candidates referring to themselves as a “real liberals” because an “unreal liberal” could be a socialist or, God forbid, a communist.

Does a “real conservative” have a picture of George III buried somewhere in the attic with a prayer on his lips telling the ancients that he is working hard to restore the Monarchy?

Another term that totally confuses me is “social conservative.” Does that mean you keep Grandpa’s KKK sheet in a closet in back just off the garage?

We keep dressing up these hardcore terms so it’s comfortable for us to be labeled by them. Our Revolution in the 18th century was held by conservative men who wanted their freedom and freedom for everybody else as well. I don’t believe those conservatives who fought so hard and put their lives and property on the line would recognize these “real conservatives” today. The American political scene has turned me into a “real” doubter.

Ronn Mott, a longtime radio personality in Terre Haute, writes commentaries for the Tribune-Star. His pieces are published online Tuesday and Thursday on Tribstar.com, and in the print and online editions on Saturday.
