Scooters need quick attention
I hear this discussed on a daily basis in our city of Terre Haute, and we are all wondering when the state is going to get a handle on the scooter drivers.
As we all know, most of them do not have driver’s licenses, and I am sure many of them have probably been suspended for DUI. Many are under 16 and could not get a license. None of them drive plated vehicles like all the rest of us do, and none of them drive with their lights on.
Motorcycle riders in Indiana have to have motorcycle licenses to operate them … plates, registration and insurance. There is no doubt not one of the scooter drivers has insurance, so what happens when they cause an accident?
These machines need to be taken off the streets unless the operator has a valid Indiana license, a registration involving a plate of some type, and, most importantly, proof of insurance.
I am from Indianapolis and this did not go on over there like it is here, and I see it as totally out of control. On Saturday I saw a woman coming south on 19th Street on a scooter with about a 4- to 5-year-old child between her legs running 30 miles an hour down the street. I almost went after her. Is that not child endangerment, and would the police really turn their head in that situation? I hope not.
How can we get this stopped? It is long overdue and way out of control. Scooters are only small motorcycles run by a smaller engine, and there should be no difference in the law for them than for motorcycle riders. Why is that?

Dr. Davis seen as ‘godsend’
We just read several more letters on the behalf of Dr. Henry Davis, and my husband and I agree 100 percent. We wanted to do our part in supporting him.
I personally think Dr. Davis is a godsend, and I have told him that.
We used to take my mother to Indianapolis to see him and we were very happy when he came to Terre Haute. He took very good care of my mother, and now my husband and I are both patients of his and have been for years.
He is one of the kindest and most caring doctors we know. He always takes an interest in his patients.
We can’t believe this is happening to him, and we would do anything to back him.
We pray that God will see him through this and get him back in his office seeing his patients again.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Dr. Henry Davis — he is a godsend.

A checklist of liberal excesses
So much to say, so little space.
I wonder under which category Mr. Hastings will classify this letter. I presume he is still counting. While he worries about staying even, the rest of us should continue to work on getting ahead.
Mr. Mott’s attempts at being a political pundit leave a lot to be desired. He asserted G.W. Bush was the dumbest president ever, (regardless the fact he had better grades than Sen. John Kerry). We have no idea what academic record, if any, the current occupant of the White House would provide. Mr. Mott makes no mention of how dumb the current president sounds at times. Remember corpsman pronounced as corpse man and Marine Corps pronounced as Marine corpse? Perhaps this is another case of academic advancement similar to that of Dr. Chavis in the 1970s. I am reluctant to comment further regarding the situation for fear of upsetting Ms. Thomas and others who see any opposition to Mr. Obama as racism.
Regarding respect, Ms Thomas, let us remember how “respectful” Senators Obama, Reid and Clinton were to General Petraeus. Is the liberal memory really that short? Or do you have a different set of standards? Your assertions concerning the Heritage Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce only point to the woeful lack of information you have accessed.
For those commenting online at tribstar.com through the Disqus link: it would be beneficial if some of you would at least read a little about the subjects upon which you presume to be knowledgeable. You are the supposed experts on anything and everything about which you apparently know nothing.
Belittling Ray Broshar, online, for example, for his knowledge of financial and fiscal issues is as smart as saying “you didn’t build that.” Envy of the success of men like Mr. Broshar and others highlights a lack of understanding of the economy and business.
In response to Mr. Hasan, who, like CAIR, Hamas and the Islamic Society of North America strives to misconstrue all discussion of Muslim groups like the Muslim Brotherhood as fear mongering, one can only pray that more Americans read the writings of Hassan al-Banna and associates in order to understand the goals of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Apparently political correctness has blinded the government from the top down. They cannot even try Major Hasan for terrorism; it might cost a few Muslim votes. Now his trial is postponed because they do not think he can be forced to shave for the trial. Is he still an Army Officer? Then he should shave. If he needs assistance, we can find a few volunteers.

Ryan has our best interests at heart
Regarding Mr. Nicley’s remarks about “Right time for Congress to leave”:
John Boehner, like most all other politicians, is playing politics in Washington and not doing the “people’s” work. However, John Boehner is only one of many, many politicians not doing their job.
This Democrat and Republican divide is disgusting. It is most of Washington, both Democrats and Republicans, that have disgusted me.
Doug Heye, a spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., defended the chamber, citing over 30 economic measures the House has passed that have fizzled in the Democratic-run Senate “at the behest of a president who is presiding over the worst economic recovery in history.”
I would love for all Democrats and Republicans to have the heart of Paul Ryan. I believe he does have our best interests at heart. While he may not have all the answers, he works like a trooper, says it like it is and can blur this Republican/Democrat crap and get some work done in Washington. Let’s reform all of Washington and get this economy going again.
