TERRE HAUTE — Romney speech truly inspiring

I was truly impressed with the victory speech given by Gov. Mitt Romney in Manchester, N.H., celebrating a clean sweep of five primaries.

He spoke of the America which I, personally, aspire for our country to become: one of pride and hard work. The cardinal principle in achieving national pride is a strong economy. And a strong economy can only be attained, in my view, by cutting taxes. And simultaneously, unleashing the famous American entrepreneurial spirit, without being shackled by a labyrinth of federal agencies.

If I may, I would like to borrow a great line from Mr. Romney’s speech. In reference to a phrase in the presidential campaign in the ’90s, operatives in the Democratic Party used (this phrase) very successfully.

Gov. Romney changed the structure of the phrase in a very clever manner, in my opinion.

He said: “It’s still about the economy — and we are not stupid.”

If I had the opportunity to speak to President Obama, I would say to him: “Sir, class warfare is not the American Way.”

Students get a dose of reality

The Perspectives section of the April 22 edition of the Tribune-Star featured an article about Greenwood Middle school students attending a Reality Story activity.  Students selected a job with salary and then paid bills they might have as an adult.

All Vigo County eighth-graders participated in the same type of program called Let’s Get Real at Woodrow Wilson Middle School the week of April 9.

Our students were randomly given an occupation with a salary (and the education required for this job) and some were given a spouse and/or children.

Students then had to establish a bank account and pay taxes and other monthly bills, including educational loans.

Students who ran out of money went to financial counseling. This activity was under the direction of Mr. Doug Dillion of the Vigo County School Corp. and was staffed by local business leaders and parent volunteers.

Sponsors of Let’s Get Real included Terre Haute Savings Bank, Vigo County School Corp., Junior Achievement, Indiana State University, Ivy Tech Community College, Rose-Hulman Homework Hotline and Harrison College.

Let’s Get Real will be moving to September for the 2012-2013 school year.

This activity provides valuable hands-on experience for Vigo County eighth-graders.
