RONN MOTT’S MINUTE: China lurks

I don’t know if this is shocking information, or just information. The United States and France attract more tourists than any other country. So, if we’re one and two, who is number three? Number three is China … raking in tons of money.

The trip between Shanghai and the capital city, Beijing, used to be a 10-hour trip. Now, with electro-magnetic speed trains, it’s only three hours. It’s going to make a big difference when doing business in China.

The Chinese are also building their first aircraft carrier. The aircraft carrier is to the 21st century what gun boats were to the last two centuries. They want to be a bigger power in the oceans of Asia.

What makes any of this astounding is the aforementioned building projects are extremely expensive. China may not want to be the bully at the tale of nations, but they want to be “one of the guys.” And the fact that we are in debt to the Chinese to the tune of billions of dollars, may be the best air defense plan we have ever had.

Ronn Mott, a longtime radio personality in Terre Haute, writes commentaries for the Tribune-Star. His pieces are published online Tuesday and Thursday on Tribstar.com, and in the print and online editions on Saturday.
