RONN MOTT’S MINUTE: Radio Carousel

The carousel of radio stations is spinning again in Terre Haute. It involves change of ownership. That will mean a change in management, sales techniques and programming. Midwest Broadcasting, a company out of Green Bay, Wis., is the new owner of WBOW-FM 102.7 and AM-1300. They are the owners and operators of Mix FM, WIBQ-FM, “The Valley,” and WPRS 1440- AM in Paris, Ill. They will be moving their new acquisition to South Third Street where all of their stations are housed.

What they will do in a programming sense is pure speculation, but I believe they will be targeting HI 99. It’s a simple observation. HI 99 has the biggest share of ratings and Midwest, i.e. 102.7, will want a bigger piece of the pie. Which means it will be some form or type of “country.”

WSDM, which you have known recently as ESPN Radio, and before that as “The Crock,” will be handled by Emmis Broadcasting, the owners of HI 99 and “The River.” What they will program on their new acquisition, 92.7 FM, is anybody’s guess.

The last of Crossroads Communications to be sold or given up in an agreement with new management is WAXI 104.9-FM. WAXI is licensed to the town of Rockville. And the gossip on the street is WAXI will be playing, once again, some form or type of past hits. Oldies, if you will. This report is also speculation, tidbits of information from the gossip chain, and calculated guesses.

But for those in our city and surrounding area, it means that all of the stations licensed to Terre Haute and Brazil will be under two ownerships. And none of the ownerships call Terre Haute home. Will it be better or worse for all of us?  We listeners, citizens, and the average “Joe” or “Jane,” will just have to wait to hear how it goes.

Ronn Mott, a longtime radio personality in Terre Haute, writes commentaries for the Tribune-Star. His pieces are published online Tuesday and Thursday at Tribstar.com, and in the print and online editions on Saturday.
