TERRE HAUTE — Lifelong Staten Islander Valerio (Val) Chironna, 86, of Eltingville, the owner of a fuel oil company, died Saturday, June 12, 2010, in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, N.Y.

Born and raised in West Brighton, he graduated from Curtis High School and a technical school in Manhattan.

Mr. Chironna served in the U.S. Army as a private first class during World War II, from 1943 to 1945, stationed in the European theater. He was assigned to cryptography and communications for the 12th Air Force Division and was awarded three Bronze Stars.

He was a founding member in 1948 of Club 18, a West Brighton social club, and moved to Eltingville in 1964.

Mr. Chironna owned and operated Chironna Brothers Fuel Oil Company on Forest Avenue in West Brighton for 29 years, and later as an electrician for Marine Power and Light in West Brighton for 14 years. He then worked as an engineer for Sun Chemical in Rosebank as an electrician and heating installer for four years, retiring 19 years ago.

He was a member of the Richmond County VFW Post, and a member of the Masons for 50 years. He was honored as Mason of the Year in 1990 and served as master of the Richmond Masonic Lodge in 1968 and as district deputy grand master of the Richmond Masonic District in 1985 and 1986.

Mr. Chironna also was a volunteer at the heart tower at Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze for many years.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, the former Carmela (Millie) Gagliardi; three sons, Robert, Ronald and Jon; two brothers, Louis and Dr. John Chironna Jr.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 16, 2010, in Olivet Presbyterian Church, in West Brighton, N.Y. Burial was in Ocean View Cemetery in Oakwood. Arrangements were under the direction of Matthew Funeral Home in Willowbrook, N.Y., and Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, in Terre Haute.
