TERRE HAUTE —
Pauline Arnold Mobley, 89, passed from this Earth on Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Meadows Manor North Nursing Home, where she resided for six years. Pauline was born Oct. 21, 1920, to John Ernst Arnold and Ora Alta Wilson. Pauline was a 1936 graduate of Concanon High School and attended Indiana Normal College for two years before marrying her husband, Archie S. Mobley, in 1939.
Pauline co-founded Mobley’s Gardens in North Terre Haute with her husband and managed the family’s business, building the first standalone garden center in west-central Indiana/east-central Illinois at 2327 Lafayette Ave. in 1956. She and her husband conducted the business at that location for more than 40 years. In addition, she was general manager of local radio station WMFT (later WAAC), co-founded with her husband in 1958. “Speak Out,” a local call-in opinion talk program was her innovation and a forerunner of contemporary “talk” radio.
She and her husband were charter members of the first Southern Baptist Church in Terre Haute, then called Temple Baptist Church, having previously attended North Terre Haute Baptist Church. She was the sole woman member of the Southern Baptist Convention of Indiana’s governing board and was president of the Indiana Southern Baptist Women’s Missionary Union. In later life, she attended Faith Baptist Church at 2505 College Avenue. Her faith sustained her in her six years at Meadows Manor North as she confronted her failing health and remains an anchor for her family.
Although her customers and friends (often the same) at the garden center were her central pastime, Pauline was active in conservative politics and enjoyed antiquing. Rediscovering her German heritage, she was an avid traveler, visiting Europe and her German relatives eight times. She was a founding member of the Terre Haute German Oberlander Club. She also traveled to Israel and Egypt.
Pauline was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Archie S. Mobley of Sumter, S.C., who passed away Sept. 13, 1993. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, John Arnold, Virgil Arnold, and Dale Wayne Snyder; and one sister, Helen Leek.
She is survived by two brothers, Russell Arnold and Robert Snyder; and four sisters, Erna Rice, Virginia Leek, Anna Mae Owen, and Faye Bell Ridner. Pauline also is survived by three sons, Archie S. Mobley Jr. and his wife Susan of Nashua, N.H., John Samuel Mobley and his wife Jane of Indianapolis, and David Russell Mobley of Terre Haute. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Heather (Greg) Taylor of Farmington, Conn., Archie S. “Scott” Mobley III (Kim-Ly) of Amhurst, N.H., John Samuel Mobley Jr. of Phoenix, Jeffrey David “J.D” Mobley (Kerri) of Golden, Colo., and Katherine Elisabeth (Kate) Mobley of Indianapolis. Pauline also is survived by eight great-grandchildren; and a very special former daughter-in-law, Martha Dennis Christianson and her husband Bob of Phoenix.
Services will be Saturday, June 26, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, with visitation from 10 a.m. until service time. Assisting in the service will be Pastor Jim Gibson with special music provided by Sam Glover. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Diabetes Association.
