Carol Mae Wassink

Carol Mae Wassink, 75, of Terre Haute, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, in her residence. She was born Jan. 19, 1934, in Sheboygan, Wis., to Edward and Clara Ten Pas. She was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Wassink, whom she married on June 14, 1958, in Cedar Grove, Wis., one son, Gregory Wassink (and wife Debbie) of Bolingbrook, Ill., and two daughters, Lori Evanich (and husband John) of Griffith, and Jennifer Baker (and husband Kraig) of Danville. Also surviving are grandchildren, Stephen and Rachel Wassink, Brittany and John Jacob Evanich, and Alexandria, Kameron, and Claire Baker. Other survivors include three sisters, Charlotte Katona of Sun City, Ariz., Lavonne Paige of Blue Mounds, Wis., Miriam Heinen (and husband Norman), of Gibbsville, Wis.; one brother, Paul Ten Pas (and wife Donna) of Sheboygan Falls, Wis.; two sisters–in-law, Lois Ten Pas of Oostburg, Wis., and Rebecca Ten Pas of Sun City; one aunt, Kay White of Tarboro, N.C.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Kenneth Ten Pas and Warren Ten Pas; and two brothers-in-law, Joseph Katona and Clayton Paige.

She was educated at Cedar Grove High School and Sheboygan County Teachers College, in Wisconsin, and received her baccalaureate degree from Indiana State Teachers College, in 1960, in Terre Haute. She taught eight grades in a one room school house for four years in Wisconsin, and did substitute teaching and volunteer teaching for more than 30 years in Vigo County. After church and family, her greatest love was teaching. She taught Sunday school for many years and sang in church choirs over a period of 60 years. Her favorite hobbies were gardening and craft work.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Unity Presbyterian Church and a memorial service will be Sunday at 2 p.m., in the church, with the Rev. Linda Peters officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Cedar Grove, Wis. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either Unity Presbyterian Church or Hospice of the Wabash Valley in her memory. DeBaun Springhill Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.
