Ernestine L. Baker, 89, of Terre Haute and Clay City, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at 5:53 p.m., in Union Hospital. She had worked at Mid States Paper Company (later called Brown Paper Company). Ernestine was born Oct. 15, 1920, in Terre Haute, to Clyde Ethington and Marie (Brooks) Ethington.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Harold Baker; a daughter, Sharon Baker Jaggard of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, Harold Edward Baker III and his wife Laurette McCarthy of Terre Haute; a brother, William Ethington and his wife Mary of St. Petersburg; three grandsons, Christopher Baker of Terre Haute, Seth Baker and his wife Mandy of Dennison, Ill., and Chad Jaggard and his wife Terin of Indianapolis; a brother-in-law, Stanley Davis of Brazil; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of First United Church of Christ in Clay City, Order of Eastern Star, the German Club in Terre Haute, the Hulman Air Field Air National Guard Wives Club, and Everwelcome (the Purdue University Home Extension Club in Clay City). She was a 1939 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and a graduate of Terre Haute Business College. She was a very active volunteer in different clubs and organizations.
Gathering of friends and family will be Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, from noon until 2 p.m. in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with a memorial service at 2 p.m., with Doug Wetherston officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to either the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, or Disabled Veterans of Indiana. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
