Martha Jean Burton


Martha Jean Burton, 78, of DeBary, Fla., passed away on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009. A native of Terre Haute. She was born Aug. 27, 1932, to Elaine Neal and Claude Champion. She moved to Central Florida in 1968. Martha was retired. She worked as a school secretary and teacher’s aide. She also worked in advertising for newspapers and magazine publishing companies in several states. Martha’s interests included taking art classes, playing the piano, singing and knitting. She was a past member of DeBary Art League, The Sweet Adelines and Triad. In her children’s growing-up years, she was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, room mother, PTA board member, Vacation Bible School director, and she created art illustrations for stories for children. Martha enjoyed her role as a Navy wife, which allowed her to live in and travel to many areas of the United States during her husband’s career. She was a member of Open Air Christian Church in Deland, Fla.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Eugene; four children, Deborah Kane (Michael) of Orlando, Fla., Karen Burton D’Angelo of Sanford, Fla., David Burton (Beth) of Dunnellon, Fla., and Christopher (Kerry) Burton of Deltona, Fla. She also is survived by nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Baldauff Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 1233 Saxon Boulevard, in Orange City, Fla. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment is in Florida National Cemetery.
