Arnold Hughes, 84, of southern Vigo County, died Nov. 7, 2009. He was born on Feb. 26, 1925, to Henry and Emma (Hoggatt) Hughes. He retired in 1985, as a foreman from Pfizer Inc. Vigo Plant, where he had been a longtime employee. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and also was a 50-plus years member of the Prairieton Volunteer Fire Department, he belonged to the Wabash Western Riders Club and in his earlier life was very active with the Boy Scouts. He especially enjoyed traveling and fishing. He and his wife owned and operated a greenhouse and market garden at their home for many years.
His survivors include his wife, Patricia (Keeney) Hughes, whom he married January 26, 1946; two sons, David Hughes and his wife Maureen, and Douglas Lee Hughes; a sister, Edna Vencel; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Lorna Keeney; a grandson, Noah Thomas Hughes; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Elaine Newton.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive. Burial will be in New Harmony Cemetery. Calling hours are today from 6 to 8 p.m. The family kindly requests that contributions be made to Prairieton Volunteer Fire Department in his memory.
