David S. Chapman
CARBON — David S. Chapman, 76, of rural Carbon, died unexpectedly Aug. 6, 2009 at Union Hospital. He was born July 19, 1933 in Parke County, the son of Glenn Miller Chapman and Eula Mae Strange Chapman. He graduated from Bridgeton High School, Class of 1951. He attended Morehead State University in Kentucky. David served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On June 12, 1954 he married the love of his life, Shirley Mager Chapman. Together they raised their family not far from his family home place in rural Parke County. He was a life-long member of the Bridgeton United Methodist Church and served the church in many capacities over the years. He was also active in numerous community civic organizations, but most important were his church and his family.
David was a farmer all his life, and also worked part time for the Pike Lumber Co. in Carbon.
Survivors include his loving wife Shirley; son, Michael David Chapman and wife Patti of Fairland, Ind.; daughter, Cathy Jean Hutcheson and husband Ted of Carbon; five grandchildren, Candice J. Burnett (Jordan), Cara J. Johnson (Michael), Kimberly S. Chapman, Kathryn M. Chapman and David Michael Chapman; one sister, Audrey Biggs and husband Bob of Payson, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Rosemary Chapman of Lafayette; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, infant Morris, and Julian Chapman.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave. Brazil, Ind. with his brother-in-law, Pastor Perry Mager and the Rev. Linda Smock officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will follow services at the Mager Cemetery in Diamond. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or to The Gideons.
