BRAZIL — William Freeman, 75, of Brazil, passed away at St. Vincent Clay Hospital’s emergency room, on June 28, 2010, from an apparent heart attack. He was born in Clay City, on Aug. 15, 1934, the son of Russell and Lora (Greenwell) Freeman. He attended Clay City High School before joining the U.S. Air Force. Bill married Barbara Bond on Sept. 1, 1951; she preceded him in death May 14, 1993. Mr. Freeman served as a helicopter navigator during the Korean War. While flying on a mission in Korea his helicopter was shot down. Bill along with one other soldier survived, however he was injured during the subsequent crash. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in April of 1957. He married Susie (Minnick) Wilson April 9, 1994. After returning home Mr. Freeman worked as a salesman for Van Camp Hardware in Indianapolis, and Losher’s Auto Parts in Terre Haute. He retired from Van Camp’s Hardware in 1971.
He was a member of the Brazil First United Methodist Church, Clay City Lodge 562 Free & Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite of Terre Haute, Bowling Green Chapter 304 Order of Eastern Star, Disabled American Veterans Leon Von Schepper Chapter, American Legion Post 2, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1127, and Brazil Elks Lodge 762.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Grace Hollars; brothers, Clifford Freeman, Robert Freeman and Richard Freeman; and a grandson, Todd Wilson.
Survivors include his wife, Susie Freeman of Brazil; children, William Clifton Freeman and wife Rebecca of Maryland, Jaye Holley and husband Frank of Terre Haute, Kirk Freeman and wife Geri of Brazil, and Lisa Norman and husband Richard of Gosport, Kim Stearley and husband Tim of Brazil, and Kevin Wilson of Iowa; grandchildren, Andrew Freeman and wife Brandy, David Freeman, Hannah Freeman, Jennifer Herrmann and husband Jeremy, Jessica Bertsch and husband Fritz, Stephanie Holley, Jared Freeman, Caleb Freeman, Jonah Freeman, Jillian Freeman, Caitlin Norman, Kendal Norman, Kirsten Norman, Krista Stearley, Trent Stearley, and Shianne Wilson; great-grandsons, Carter Herrmann, Dylan Herrmann, and Seamus Freeman; sisters, Hazel Harris and husband Wayne of Lewis, and Virginia Luff and husband Claud of Owensville; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Services will be at Lawson Miller Chapel on Thursday, July 1, 2010, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Tony Alstott officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, with military rites being provided by members of the VFW, American Legion Post, and the US Air Force. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Brazil First United Methodist Church Caring Ministry, 201 N. Meridian St., Brazil, IN 47834.
