Charles Cannon Smith
Charles Cannon Smith, 82, born April 22, 1927, in Louisiana, Mo., to John Cannon Smith and Charlotte “Lottie” Gilbert Smith, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, in his Terre Haute home.
A 1945 graduate of Louisiana High School, Charles served in the U.S. Navy and went on to Culver Stockton University, graduating in 1953. His work for Western Electric took him to Italy, Greece, and Spain, setting up communications equipment to assist the NASA space program moon landing. He also worked on the Alaskan Pipeline Project. After 25 years of service, he retired in 1996 from Union Hospital.
Charles is survived by Sharon Lemaire Smith, his loving wife of 32 years; his three children and eight grandchildren, Robert (Michelle) Smith (Ethan, Ryan, and Andrew) of Pittsboro, Ind., Sheri (Eric) Hanson (Reta, Keisandra, and Kenna) of Canon City, Colo., and John (Valarie) Smith (Cannon and Mira) of Tucson, Ariz.; his two sisters, Eleanor “Jeanie” (Joseph) Mackey of Wichita, Kans., and Marjorie (Carroll) Wells of St. Charles, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be conducted in celebration of his life at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009, at Northside Community United Methodist Church, 1075 N. Fruitridge Ave., with the Rev. Frank Oakman officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St.
