Dayton Witty

Dayton Witty, 88, of Terre Haute, formerly of Brazil died July 22, 2009 at 10:15 p.m. at Union Hospital following a brief illness. He was born May 17, 1921 in Tompkinsville, Ky., the son of Benton Witty and Minnie Miller Witty. As a young boy his family moved to the Bridgeton area and had a family farm. He worked on the farm before serving in the Army in 1945. He was married to Lillian Anna Tiefel Witty for over 54 years. She preceded him in death in 1996.

In his life time Dayton worked several different careers including work at Champagne Velvet Brewery, Home Packing, Ethyl-Visqueen and the State Hwy. Department. He last worked at the Putnamville Correctional Facility as a prison guard, retiring in 1985.

He enjoyed working in the vegetable garden, flowers, hunting and fishing. He was a man who loved his God, his family and was a devoted grandpa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lillian; three brothers, Oval Witty, Otis Witty, and Jack Witty; one sister Jewel; stepson, Arlan Lemen.

On Oct. 17, 1998 he married Dorothy Handick Lemen Witty. They both felt blessed to have had this union and Dorothy survives.

Other survivors include children, Karen Kibbe (Ron), Paula Church (Dennis), Larry Witty (Leah), and Susan Kay Deakins (Jack) all of Brazil; stepchildren, Don Lemen and Marcia Lemen; seven grandchildren, Nancy Applegate (Tim), Tim Kibbe (Michelle), Debbie Hill (Matt), Rev. Paul Church (Victoria), Joe Witty (Autumn), Alan Deakins (Onica), Chris Deakins (Mandy); 15 great-grandchildren, Abbey, Alex, T.J., Ethan, Erin, Gina, Madison, Dayton, Landon, Morgan, Claire, Lauren, Tiffany, Bailey, Nathan; three step-grandchildren, Bryan Wade, Brandon Wade, Leland Lemen; one great-granddaughter, Airella; one brother, James Witty (Charlotti); one sister, Joyce Kramer (Hank); several nieces and nephews and other extended family.

Services will be Saturday at noon in French Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Minks officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. and again Saturday prior to services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Life Center, 3000 College Ave. Terre Haute, IN 47802.
