William H. Shields, 79, of Terre Haute, died Monday, July 6, 2009. He was born in Prairieton, on Nov. 5, 1929, to Joseph and Florence (Jones) Shields. He retired from Hulman & Company in 1983. He was married to his wife, Kathleen, for 44 years, before her death in 1991. William served in the Navy Reserves, and was a member of American Legion Post 40.
He is survived by four sons, Bill (Cheryl) Shields, Dan (Cindy) Shields, all of Terre Haute, Donald Shields of Bybee, Tenn., and John (Jane) Shields of Brazil; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brother, Joseph Shields Jr. of Parrottsville, Tenn. He also was preceded in death by his son, David; and a brother, Robert Shields.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E Springhill Drive. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home, with the Rev. W.A. Van Winkel officiating. Burial is at New Harmony Cemetery, with graveside military services, provided by American Legion Post 346. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that, donations in William's honor be made to the American Heart Association, with envelopes provided at the funeral home.
