Maurice L. ‘Buck’ Gillin

TERRE HAUTE — Maurice L. “Buck” Gillin, 86, of Terre Haute, went to heaven surrounded by his family at 5:05 a.m. on March 7, 2013. He was born on Aug. 2, 1926, to Nick and Elizabeth Gillin, in Jasonville. On June 9, 1951, he married the love of his life Catherine ‘Katie’ McCombs. They were married for 59 years before her passing in 2010.

Buck enjoyed fishing on the river, telling stories, and spending time with his family.  He bowled on a league until the age of 85. Buck coached Little League baseball with the VFW team for 25 years. He was a member of the Rosedale American Legion for 23 years, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. Buck worked at Quaker Maid for 25 years and for Sackrider Accounting Service for over 20 years.  But his favorite job was his most recent at Show-Me’s, where he was a door greeter for the last three years.

He is survived by his children, Martha Allen of Owensville, Deb Maynard and Scott Pinkston of Farmersburg, Libby Kerr and her husband Steve of Prairie Creek, and Ronnie Gillin and his wife Diana of Terre Haute. He leaves behind his 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. His also is survived by his brothers, Bill Gillin, Dick Gillin, and Bob Gillin and his wife Barb; and his sister-in-law, Patsy Eldridge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine “Katie”; brother, John “Luke” Gillin; son, Robert “Butch” Allen; daughter, Sue Solonka; and his parents; as well as many other friends and family waiting for him to party in heaven.  

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013, in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with the Rev. Rick Swan officiating. Burial will be at New Harmony Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Vista Care Hospice or a charity of your choice.
