TERRE HAUTE —
Mary Catherine McGuigan Dowen, 86, of Terre Haute, passed away at Springhill Village, on Feb. 25, 2013. Mary was born in Universal, on Feb. 26, 1926, to Patrick and Helen (Conway) McGuigan. She graduated from Garfield High School. She worked at Gillis Drugstore downtown, while waiting for Jim to return from serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned in December of 1945, and they were married on Jan. 27, 1946. She proudly raised their children and returned to work at Hooks Drugstore for eight years. Mary and Jim grew up on North Fourth Street and they lived all of their married life just a few blocks away on North Center Street.
Mary and Jim raised three children, son, James Allen Dowen (wife Margaret who is deceased); son, Frank Scott and wife Amy; daughter, Carole Nasser and husband Abe. Mary and Jim also had nine grandchildren, Becky Connell and husband Bart, Margaret O’Toole and husband Ron, Mary Thatcher and husband Troy, Amy Connally and husband Stan, Ashley and Elizabeth Dowen, Abe Nasser and wife Emily, and Annie Bacon and husband Nathan. She also had 15 great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years in 1998; a sister, Betty Burns; and a grandson, Scott M. Dowen.
Private family services will be held. Thomas Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Springhill Village, who made Mary’s final years very comfortable. Online condolences may be made at:
