BRAZIL — David G. Hunter, 93 of Brazil, passed away Feb. 8, 2012, at Cobblestone Crossing. He was born May 7, 1918, in Clay County the son of John “Stick” Hunter and Mae Comparon Hunter. He graduated from Brazil High School and lived all his life in Brazil. He started work at an early age with a small wagon delivering newspapers for the Brazil Times. He later worked at Bedwell Tire. Dave and his brother Jack Hunter built and co-owned Hunter Tire Service and later Dave began his own company known as Hunter Oil Co. Inc. where he worked for over 65 years as a Phillips 66 Petroleum jobber.
Dave was always active in his community and belonged to various organizations including Exchange Club, Elks Lodge, Veteran of Foreign Wars 1127, 40/8 Club, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, and American Legion Post 2. He was very active in the American Legion post, serving as Commander of the Color Honor guard for many years. He was also the last man of his Last Mans ritual club.
Mr. Hunter served as Mayor of Brazil from 1980 to 1984. He was very proud to have served as mayor and worked hard to improve the city of Brazil.
Dave was a devoted member of the First Christian Church and had served as a trustee, deacon and elder for many years.
Dave married the love of his life, Margueritte Miller Hunter on Dec. 24, 1941. Just a few weeks after their marriage he began service to his country in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mae Hunter; his beloved wife Margueritte passed away in 1988; one brother, Jack Hunter and one sister, Florence Hill.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Suzy and John Kyle of Terre Haute; three grandsons, John David “J.D” Kyle and wife Amy of Greenwood, Ind., Jason R. Kyle of Fishers, Ind., and Kraig A. Kyle of Dallas; two great-grandchildren, Ashley E. Kyle and Landon O. Kyle; one nephew, Jack R. Hunter and a great-nephew, J.B. Hunter of Brazil.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave. Brazil with Pastor Chris Gregg officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and again prior to services Monday at the funeral home. Burial with graveside military honors will be at Summit Lawn Cemetery.
