TERRE HAUTE —
Alexander Joseph Behrendt went to his heavenly home on Jan. 26, 2013, in Terre Haute. He was born Dec. 10, 1916, to Herman and Marie Behrendt (Grieder, in Detroit. Al worked at Burrough's Corporation, in Detroit, as a machinist for 44 years, and that is where he met his wife of 59 years, the late Marjorie Behrendt (Wellmer). Al was a hard-working man who sought to provide the best for his family, and for a time owned a landscaping business in addition to his job at Burrough's. After retirement Al and Marj became snowbirds, spending the winters at their home in Plant City, Fla., where they lived until 2006 when they relocated to Terre Haute.
A man of great faith, Al was always involved with church. He made time for church work — whether serving as an usher, an elder, fundraising, or helping with Vacation Bible School. Al was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. He also served in the community, most notably as president of the Pleasant Ridge (Michigan) Foundation and on the board of directors for the Burrough's Credit Union. He is fondly remembered by many as the dispenser of Cracker Jacks at the annual 4th of July festivities at Burrough's Farms in Brighton, Mich. Al had a passion for the game of golf and also enjoyed square dancing. He always loved to sing, and for the past few years he was the karaoke star of happy hour at Cobblestone Crossings where he resided.
Al is survived by his children, David (Patti) of Shelby Township, Mich., Rick (Jill) of Sevierville, Tenn., Jerry (Sharon) of Wales, Mich., Bruce (Karen) of Quitman, Ark., Linda of Terre Haute, and Mark (Jan) of Howell, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-granchildren. Also surviving is a niece, LaNette (Ron) Gunderson of Mililani, Hawaii; and nephew, Kris (Sharon) Wellmer and their children of Northville, Mich. Al also was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings.
Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, with the funeral mass to follow at 11 a.m., with Father Rick Ginther officiating. Interment will be at Glen Eden Cemetery, in Michigan. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Cobblestone Crossings Health Campus and VistaCare Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Alexander. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Margaret Mary Church. Arrangements are under the direction of DeBaun Funeral Home and Crematory. Online condolences may be left at:
