TERRE HAUTE —
Bettie Jean Cooper (Wood), born at home on Jan. 21, 1952, in Wayne County, Ky., with the loving aid of her great-aunt, Dove Love, passed to the other side at approximately 9:40 a.m. Jan. 20, 2013, at Union Hospital, after experiencing complications from surgery. Her family was with her at her bedside to bless her on her journey.
She spent much of her young life in Spencer, Ind., and graduated from Spencer High School in 1970 with honors. While attending high school, she was instrumental in naming the now Owen Valley High School. Also during this time, at age 14, she began working as a waitress and became involved in the counter-culture movement of the 1960s. Following graduation, she moved to Terre Haute, where she attended classes at Indiana State College for two years.
Bettie Jean Cooper was an active member of the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Terre Haute and she served as a chairperson of the hospitality committee, in addition to supporting and participating in various church functions. She loved literature and is fondly remembered for writing letters to the editor of the Tribune-Star. Furthermore, she had a deep appreciation for music and live performances and instilled this quality into her children.
Bettie Jean Cooper was preceded in death by her mother, Lucie Jean Dodson Wood, and her father, James McCage Wood.
Family was very important to her, and she is survived by her son, Bradley Floyd Cooper, and daughter-in-law, Melissa Ann Cooper; her daughter, Andrea Nicole Molina, and son-in-law, Thomas Molina; her son, Sean Eric Mason, and daughter-in-law, Dana Mason; and a step-son, Mathew Cooper. Also surviving are her granddaughter, Cesya Lucinne Heine; her grandson, Trenton Montague-Griffin Molina; her step-granddaughter, Venetia Cooper; and a forever friend, David Cooper. Additionally, she is well-missed by many “adopted” children and friends, whom Ms. Cooper welcomed as a part of her extended family.
A memorial service will be given in her honor on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 at the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 1875 S. Fruitridge Ave. in Terre Haute, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. and service at 2 p.m. The Rev. Jennie Barrington and the Rev. Doddie Stone will co-officiate. If so desired, donations can be made to the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Terre Haute. Special thanks of appreciation go out to all of those involved in her care during the last days of her life. Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St., was entrusted with the arrangements.
