Gail Albert Eugene Wey

Gail Albert Eugene Wey, age 83, of Terre Haute, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away quietly on at Kindred Southwood on the morning of Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013. He was born Dec. 15, 1929, in Detroit, the son of the late Lucille Wey-Herter and Frank Wey.

Gail married Shirley Joan Short on March 16, 1950, and they were married 62 years before Shirley preceding him in passing. He was a lifelong resident of Terre Haute and was a 1949 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School, where he played football and ran track. He attended Indiana State University, where also he played football. While in high school, Gail obtained a certificate as a pharmacist assistant and worked at Duncan Drug Store. Gail served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and served on the destroyer, USS Willard Keith DD-775 until 1953. He later returned to work for 15 years at Ethel Visqueen, before becoming the manager of Vigo County Sewage and Water Treatment Department. In addition, he served as Director and Chief Probation Officer for Vigo County Juvenile Center. Gail retired from Indiana State University after working for 20 years as supervisor of the mail room for the Department of Alumnae Affairs. Gail kept busy by working security at Schultz’s Department Store and assisting at Roselawn Funeral Home. He and his wife, Shirley, were the proud owners of Anchor Printing Company. He also taught enrichment classes in gardening for Indiana State’s continuing education non-credit programs.

Gail was a devoted servant of the Lord and was a member of Maplewood Christian Church, where he served as both an elder and a deacon. He was a member of the Gideon’s and Kiwanis. While in Kiwanis, he belonged to several clubs and served several terms as club president. Gail also served as a Lt. Governor for the State of Indiana Kiwanis. He was the founder of the Sunrise Kiwanis Club, an active member of the community, and also served as Boy Scout leader and board member. In addition, Gail held memberships with the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Forty & Eight, the American Legion, and National Rifle Association.

Gail is survived by his three children, daughter, Shirley Gail Johnson-Williams and her husband Steve Williams of Terre Haute; son, Michael Wey and his wife Barbara of Bridgeton; and daughter, Mary Catherine Burns-Verbarg and her husband Scott Verbarg of Indianapolis. Gail was the proud and loving grandpa of grandsons, James Johnson, Matthew Wey, John Lee Burns and wife Sara Burns; granddaughter, Lindsey Fagg and her husband Nick Fagg; stepgranddaughter, Shannon Confiliano and her husband Dan, Angi Morris and husband Mason Morris and Crystal, Belinda and Brian Dobrowolski. Also surviving are 13 great-grandchildren; and Gail’s brother, Russell Herter of Louisville, Ky. In addition to his parents and his wife, Shirley, Gail was preceded in death by his brother, Frank L. Wey of Terre Haute.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, from 3 until 7 p.m. and again on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 from 10 a.m. until Gail’s funeral ceremony at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., in Terre Haute. Pastor Craig Wininger will officiate with interment to follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. In honor of Gail’s dedication and commitment to the Kiwanis, memorial contributions in his memory may be directed to Riley Children’s Hospital. The entire Wey family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Cobblestone Crossing, Southwood Nursing Home and Hospice of the Wabash Valley for the compassionate care provided in Gail’s final days.
