HYMERA — Joe Allen Harper Sr., 87, of Hymera, and formerly of Owensboro, Ky., passed away in his residence at 6 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013. Joe was born in Calhoun, Ky., on Sept. 1, 1925, to Mallie Edgar Harper and Rose Strainy Harper.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Wanda Harper in 1997; daughter, Cindy Payne in 2012; two sisters; and two brothers.
Joe is survived by his wife Sue Tipton Harper; daughters, Jolene Woodward and Sue Reed; son, Joe Harper Jr.; stepdaughter, Brandi Ranard; stepson, Clay Woodruff; sister, Marie Mills; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was the owner-operated of Harper Amusements, and a decorated World War II veteran serving in the Naval Air Corps, receiving numerous metals including three Distinguished Flying Crosses.
Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Emanuel Apostolic Church, in Hymera, from 10 a.m. until time of services at 2 p.m. with Pastor James Quick officiating. Military services will be given by Hymera, Shelburn and Sullivan American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Per his request, cremation will follow with interment at a later date.
