Sister Mary Eleanor Galvin, 86, died at 6:25 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Malden, Mass., on Dec. 3, 1926, to Joseph and Mary Downing Galvin, and was baptized Marilyn Barbara.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1945, and professed Final Vows on Aug. 15, 1952. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and master’s degrees from St. Michael University and Emmanuel College. In her 67 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as an educator for 41 years in Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland and New Hampshire. For 10 of those years, she served as principal. She taught at St. Ann School in Terre Haute during the 1950—51 school year. In 1988, Sister moved to the Motherhouse and served in Pastoral Care in Providence Health Care. Having given 11 years of service in this area, she retired and volunteered her services to the office working for the canonization of the Congregation’s foundress. Beginning in 2004, she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister is survived by a sister, Sister Michaela Galvin, SP. She is preceded in death by two brothers, Lorimer F. and Neil Downing Galvin.
The wake is from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the Wake Service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m., Jan. 5, 2013, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. The Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
