Sister Sharon Sullivan, 81, died at 11:05 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on Aug. 27, 1931, in Evansville, to John L. and Marie M. Faust Sullivan and was baptized Sharon Lee.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1949, and received the name S. Barbara Mary. She professed final vows on Jan. 23, 1957. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and master’s degrees from Indiana State University. In her 63 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered for 27 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois and California. She served as teacher and principal at St. John School in Newburgh from 1962 to 1968, and as principal at Westside Catholic Consolidated School in Evansville, from 1976 to 1981. In 1981, she moved to the motherhouse where she gave service in the Central Business Office and later in the Activity Department. In 1994, she moved to Peru, Ind.,, to work as pastoral associate in a parish there. Returning to the motherhouse in 1999, she became part of the Archives staff. Beginning in 2009, she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
She is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by three brothers, James P. Sullivan, Robert E. Sullivan, and John L. Sullivan, Jr.; and three sisters, Marie Catherine Sullivan, Barbara York and Mary J. Baehl.
The wake is on Jan. 3, 2013, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the Wake Service at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial is Jan. 4, 2013, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Providence, 1 Sisters of Providence, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876-1007.
