HARMONY — Mildred Louise Coleman, 88, of Harmony, passed away Dec. 22, 2012, following a brief illness. Mildred was born in Parke County on April 12, 1924, the daughter of Roy and Ora (Combs) Powell. Her adventurousness led her to become quite self-sufficient at an early age. Mildred left school at the age of 16 to help her family. For a period of time she worked at a boat yard where she scraped the hulls of boats before enlisting in the military. In 1945 she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps as a Med Tech. She was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1947. While in the military she was stationed in Michigan, Phoenix and Texas. Upon her return home she married Kenneth Coleman. Mildred worked at Indiana State University as a housekeeper and retired in 1987, after 15 years of service.

Mildred enjoyed playing bingo and euchre and getting together with her family for dinner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ora Powell; husband, Kenneth Coleman; sisters, Dorothy Taylor, Emma Davis, Lenora Head, Vallie Head and Gladys Williams; and a brother “Buster” Landcaster.

Mildred is survived by sons, Roy E. Coleman (Nancy), Kenny Coleman, and Leroy Coleman (Sheila); daughters, Phyllis Parksey (Wayne), Martha Ferguson, and Joyce Coleman; a sister, Loretta Jenkins; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Services will be at French Funeral Home, Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Calcutta Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 11 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Clay County Humane Society, PO Box 277, Brazil, IN 47834.
